How to setup Mesh – Ruckus Unleashed

Issue

Need to mesh1)http://docs.ruckuswireless.com/unleashed/200.1.9.12/c-Mesh.html multiple Ruckus Unleashed R500 devices together, but no documentation is provided from Ruckus.

Solution

1 – First you want to setup your first master R500 and enable MESH2)http://docs.ruckuswireless.com/unleashed/200.1.9.12/t-LogInRunSetupWizard.html. I would recommend not changing the mesh network settings. You can choose not to enable mesh now, but when you enable it later it will force all other WAPs to reboot (takes about five minutes).

2 – Take your second WAP and connect it to the same LAN, boot it up.

3 – Log into your master (first WAP) R500 and look under the AP list. You should now see a second AP added to the mesh once it’s fully booted.

4 – TEST!

I’m familiar with Ruckus equipment as I have them deployed in an enterprise environment with a controller. Fantastic products. Some executives needed solid wireless in their homes and I thought what better than an R500 ruckus WAP? A few months ago Ruckus released a consumer/SMB model, Ruckus Unleashed. My guess is this was designed for small companies starting off with no controller giving them the scaling option to add a controller at a later date as they grow. Check out the supported mesh topology.3)http://docs.ruckuswireless.com/unleashed/200.1.9.12/c-SupportedMeshTopologies.html Here is also some info regarding the unleashed model: https://www.ruckuswireless.com/products/system-management-control/unleashed

So I’m sitting here with two Ruckus unleashed R500 devices and a 3,500 sqft high-rise condo with 100 other wireless networks broadcasting. I thought one would be substantial, but the placement and existing environment doesn’t make it possible. I had to mesh the two together. Off to Ruckus support documentation! but wait… it’s not documented! Simple enough to setup, but wanted to put some documentation out there for anyone else looking for the setup instructions (note, R3xx series doesn’t have mesh ability).

How to setup mesh with Ruckus Unleashed R500:

  1. First you want to setup your first master R500 and enable MESH4)http://docs.ruckuswireless.com/unleashed/200.1.9.12/t-LogInRunSetupWizard.html. I would recommend not changing the mesh network settings. You can choose not to enable mesh now, but when you enable it later it will force all other WAPs to reboot (takes about five minutes).
  2. Take your second WAP and connect it to the same LAN, boot it up.
  3. Log into your master (first WAP) R500 and look under the AP list. You should now see a second AP added to the mesh once it’s fully booted.
  4. TEST!

A note here is make sure you have proper line of site for the WAPs. If the WAPs don’t have a good backhaul back  to eachother you’re going to have some choppy cat videos.
